Why so SAD?
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. Ever find yourself feeling low in the winter months? It’s quite possible you’re experiencing SAD—and you’re not alone. Seasonal affective disorder affects 1 in 3 people in the UK, with women 40% more likely than men to experience symptoms (according to The Weather Channel.)
Seasonal Affective Disorder is sometimes known as "winter depression" because the symptoms are usually more apparent and more severe during the winter.
Symptoms of SAD (source: NHS) can include:
- a persistent low mood
- a loss of pleasure or interest in normal everyday activities
- feelings of despair, guilt and worthlessness
- feeling lethargic (lacking in energy) and sleepy during the day
- sleeping for longer than normal
- difficulty getting up in the morning
- craving carbohydrates
- gaining weight
It’s not all doom and gloom, though. Bright light has been proven to help lift people’s spirits, and Lumie already produces a number of SAD lamps to help you banish those winter blues.
A Bright Idea
Buzzbar already brightens up one of the busiest intersections of London, so what better place to build the world’s biggest SAD lamp?
We’re taking over 20 of Lumie’s Vitamin L SAD lights and sticking them in our window for a few weeks to help thousands of Londoners get their serotonin (the chemical in your body that contributes towards well-being and happiness) levels up this winter. Measuring 1.8m wide and 3m high, the window installation will deliver the industry standard 10,000 lux, and be the largest SAD lamp in the world as there are no current record attempts on file.
The Buzzbar SAD lamps will brighten up Londoners’ days every morning from today (Wednesday, November 20th) until January 2nd 2020. The window screen will also feature local offers for passers-by to take advantage of—from coffees at local chains to lunchtime food pick-me-ups.
